Freiya: the round brass-rib counter on a backlit stone body

The workshop came first. Everything the studio draws, it can also make.

8Kunya Interior was founded by Jureerut Dumjam and has designed and built interiors in Bangkok for thirty-five years.

More than five hundred condominiums, houses, hotel spas and lounges, restaurants, bars, offices and exhibition stands. The studio still owns the joinery workshop it began with, and it still builds what it draws.

An 8, turned on its side

The symbol is the 8 of 8Kunya laid flat into infinity. Its ribbon is woven with the khom, the stepped diamond of Thai mudmee silk, where the threads are dyed before they are woven and every shape is built in steps.

We treat the weave the way we treat a room: as structure first, decoration second. It lines our envelopes, backs our cards and, on hotel projects, finds its way into the textiles.

Why this atelier

Thai hospitality, Swiss precision

The design is Thai: a feel for how a room is used in this climate, for light and timber and the place of a prayer shelf. The project management is Swiss: a fixed, itemised scope, a written programme, a photographed weekly report, and a defects walkthrough before the final payment.

One atelier, one contract

The people who survey the space are the people who draw it, price it, build it and hand it over, and the workshop that makes the joinery answers to the site team that installs it.

A drawing that never leaves the atelier

The people who draw the piece are in the same building as the people who cut it. Nothing is translated for a subcontractor who has never seen the room.

Making since 1991

8Kunya began as a joinery workshop and the workshop is still here. That is why a price per metre exists before the design is finished.

  1. 01

    Measure

The workshop measures the wall the piece will stand against, not the drawing of it. Bangkok walls are rarely square and the difference shows in the shadow gaps.

  2. 02

    Draw

A shop drawing for every piece: carcass, fronts, hardware, edges, finish and the exact dimensions that will be cut.

  3. 03

    Sample

Finish samples in the light the piece will live in, and a hardware sample you can open and close before anything is made.

  4. 04

    Make

Built in the studio’s own workshop with Blum, Hettich or Häfele hardware, so the queue, the quality and the date belong to one team.

  5. 05

    Install

Installed by the people who made it, scribed to the wall, adjusted and left level, with the site protected throughout.
