The brief
A series of counters and cabinets from the atelier, drawn for rooms that no catalogue fits. Each piece was to be sized to the space it stands in rather than to a standard, and each was to hold its working parts, a till, a drawer, a shelf of glassware, without showing them to the person standing in front of it.
What was built
As drawn, the series runs from the round host counter, a drum of vertical brass ribs set over a backlit stone body with a polished brass top, to a rectangular bar in fluted brass with a black marble top, a timber kick and a brass foot rail. A third counter turns the same section in the other direction: a dark reeded timber body with a square bronze lattice panel at its centre, a red marble top and a lit brass reveal beneath it. A fourth repeats that arrangement with a different lattice pattern and a travertine top. Two service desks are drawn in dark timber with raised back ledges, ring pulls and open shelving for a till, a printer and a cash drawer, one with a stone top the colour of the bar. A tapered brass and stone version of the drum stands as a lectern, open at the back for three shelves. The largest piece is a reception desk in backlit onyx, a floating top over a lit panel of stone.
Materials and finishes
Polished brass in ribs, sheets, rails and lattice; dark and mid-brown timber, reeded or straight-grained; stone in four registers, white onyx, black marble, red marble and travertine, backlit where the stone is thin enough to carry it. Fittings are plain: ring pulls, a foot rail, a concealed strip of light under each top.
Programme and cost band
Atelier pieces are drawn and produced alongside the studio's joinery, so no site programme applies to them. Counters of this construction, in brass, stone and solid timber, are priced against the upper part of the studio's published built-in range per linear metre rather than against a room rate.
