A walk-in closet in a Bangkok condominium: minimum size, layouts and cost
A walk-in closet needs 1.5 m of width for a single-sided run and 2.1 m for a double-sided one, both with a clear aisle of at least 90 cm. Hanging rails sit at 1.05 m for shirts and 1.75 m for long items, and a wardrobe needs 60 cm of internal depth. In 2026 the joinery costs ฿9,000 – 14,000 per linear metre in laminate and ฿16,000 – 28,000 in veneer or lacquer, so a 6 m double-sided closet is ฿54,000 – 168,000.

A walk-in closet is not a bigger wardrobe. It is a room you stand inside, which means the aisle governs everything, and in a Bangkok condominium the aisle is usually what has been left out. This guide gives the dimensions the studio draws to, the module sizes that make the joinery efficient, and the humidity detail that decides whether the clothes survive the second year.
The minimum widths
| Arrangement | Minimum width | Comfortable width | Storage per 2 m of length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-sided | 1.50 m | 1.70 m | 2 linear metres |
| Double-sided, facing runs | 2.10 m | 2.40 m | 4 linear metres |
| U-shaped, three walls | 2.10 m by 2.20 m | 2.40 m by 2.60 m | 6 linear metres |
| Double-sided with an island | 3.00 m | 3.30 m | 4 linear metres plus drawers |
The arithmetic is simple. A wardrobe run is 60 cm deep internally, 62 – 65 cm with the door, and a person needs 90 cm to stand, turn and pull out a drawer. One run plus an aisle is 1.5 m. Two runs plus an aisle is 2.1 m. Below 90 cm of aisle a drawer at the far end cannot be opened fully while you stand in front of it, which is the single most common complaint about closets that looked fine on the plan.
An island needs 90 cm on both sides of it, so 3.0 m of total width. Below that, put the drawers in the runs and use a bench instead.
Hanging heights and module sizes
- Short hanging, shirts and folded trousers: rail at 1.05 m, 1.00 m of vertical space.
- Long hanging, dresses and coats: rail at 1.75 m, 1.60 m of vertical space.
- Double hanging in one bay: rails at 1.05 m and 2.00 m, the most efficient use of height in a 2.6 m room.
- Shelves: 35 – 40 cm apart for folded clothes, 20 cm for shoes, 25 cm for boxes.
- Drawers: 15 cm internal for underwear, 20 cm for knitwear, 30 cm for bags.
- Bay width: 60 – 90 cm. Above 90 cm a rail sags and a shelf bows; below 60 cm the hardware costs more per item stored.
Allow 1 linear metre of hanging per ten shirts or six jackets. Most couples need 5 to 7 linear metres in total, of which about a third is long hanging. Counting the clothes before drawing is worth an hour.
Humidity, which is the Bangkok problem
Bangkok sits above 70 percent relative humidity for most of the year. A closet that is sealed, unlit and outside the air-conditioned envelope will grow mould on leather and cotton within one wet season. Three measures, in order of effect.
Keep the room conditioned. The cheapest fix is a door left ajar and a supply diffuser in the closet, or a 300 × 150 mm transfer grille to the bedroom. Cost, ฿3,000 – 8,000.
Ventilate the joinery. Perforate or leave a 10 mm gap at the back of every carcass so air moves behind the clothes. Cost, nothing, if it is drawn.
Add a dehumidifier point. A 12 litre unit needs a socket and, ideally, a condensate drain to the bathroom. Cost, ฿8,000 – 15,000 for the machine, ฿5,000 – 12,000 for the drain if it can be run at all.
Avoid the fashionable sealed glass-fronted cabinet unless the room is conditioned. It looks beautiful and it is a vitrine for mould.

Glass fronts, lighting and mirrors
Glass fronts, clear or bronze-tinted in a slim aluminium or brass frame, add ฿4,500 – 9,000 per square metre of door. They turn storage into display, which is only a good idea if the contents are ordered. Reeded glass forgives more.
Light matters more than the fronts. Fit a strip inside each bay at the front edge of the shelf, not at the back, so the light falls on the clothes rather than on the panel behind them. Use 3000 K and CRI 90 or better, because at CRI 80 navy and black are indistinguishable at seven in the morning. A full-height mirror on the end wall doubles the apparent length of the room and is the cheapest thing in it.
Cost, and converting a small bedroom
A 10 m² bedroom of roughly 3.0 × 3.3 m converts well. Take out the door, widen the opening to 1.2 m, run wardrobes down both long walls and put a bench or an island in the middle. That is about 6 linear metres of joinery: ฿54,000 – 84,000 in laminate, ฿96,000 – 168,000 in veneer or lacquer. Add ฿15,000 – 25,000 for lighting and power, ฿8,000 – 20,000 for glass fronts on a few bays, and ฿20,000 – 45,000 if the air conditioning has to be extended. Lead time on the joinery is three to five weeks from approved drawings, and installation takes two days.
The question to answer before starting is whether the flat can afford to lose a bedroom. In resale terms a two-bedroom unit that has become a one-bedroom with a dressing room is worth less to most buyers, so keep the conversion reversible: partitions rather than demolition, and services left where a bedroom would want them.
