The brief
“The address shows who you are.” The owner's taste for modern luxury, carried into a condominium on Sukhumvit 39: marble and golden stainless steel, answered by turquoise. The unit was to read as pale and bright throughout, with every wall either panelled, mirrored or faced in stone, and the colour held back for the furniture alone.
What was built
As drawn, the main room runs living into dining without a break. A book-matched panel of pale marble carries the screen above a long lacquered console, framed in gold stainless steel and flanked by lit display shelving. A curved turquoise sofa sits on a pale rug; beyond it a marble dining table on a gold base is ringed by six buttoned turquoise chairs under a brass and opal chandelier, with the kitchen behind in white handleless cabinets. Two further marble panels stand at each end of the room, one behind a Buddha shelf, one above a sideboard. The principal bedroom is quieter: a buttoned headboard against panels of antique mirror and stone, a dressing table, bedside chests and a window wall of textured silver covering over the city. A second bedroom takes a darker register, with a stone headboard panel, bronze open shelving, a stone desk and a half-glazed screen in dotted glass to the walk-in wardrobe. The dressing rooms themselves are gold-framed glass fronted, lit within, with drawers and shelving behind and an antique mirror panel at the head of the bed. A long corridor of full-height panelled wardrobe doors in cream and gold leads to a window table at its end.
Materials and finishes
Pale veined marble on feature walls, tops and tables; golden stainless steel as frames, reveals and furniture legs; cream lacquer and textured wall coverings on the joinery; antique mirror where the plan needs depth; pale timber flooring in the bedrooms and a pale poured floor in the living rooms. Turquoise velvet is the only strong colour and appears only on loose furniture.
Programme and cost band
Two months on site. The quantity of stone facing, metal trim and glass-fronted fitted joinery places this fit-out at the top of the studio's published condominium band, with the wardrobes and dressing rooms priced per linear metre within the built-in range.
